The next generation of Garmin dog trackers! Garmin, a respected name in GPS since 1989,
has produced this multidog-capable tracking system, the Astro 320 Combo, in response to real
hunters' requests.
Like other Garmin top-line handheld outdoor GPS devices, this one has a built-in barometric
altimeter, a 3-axle, tilt-compensated electronic compass, a micro SD card slot (card purchased
separately), celestial information, an area calculator and rugged IPX7 waterproof exterior.
Sophisticated mapping capability includes a built-in worldwide basemap that shows basic
geographical features like main roads, rivers, streams and lakes; it supports additional mapping
with Garmin Custom Maps, BirdsEyeTM overlay satellite imagery, and TOPO 24K. The 65k,
full-color TFT MAP screen display (160 x 240 pixels) is a 2.6" (6.6 cm) screen that can easily be
read in sunlight. Optional detailed city street maps allow you to search for over 6 million points
of interest and create a route on roads with exact turn-by-turn directions.
All maps can be customized to show as little or as much detail as you prefer. The Astro 320
receiver comes equipped with a toggle button that can hide or show:
- Dog names
- Dog status
- Dog distance
- Off-screen dogs (which appear in the margin)
- Partial or complete history
Wireless data sharing enables the transfer of tracks, waypoints and dog settings to other Astro
320 users. A vibration mode facilitates silent alerts.
The Astro 320 can track up to ten dogs with the purchase of additional transmitter collars. You have the ability to set up your first dog and use his settings for the other dogs, or to make changes if you want different settings for different dogs. Its standard, removable VHF antenna and a flexible, long-range antenna provide a range of up to 9 miles with the DC-40 collar. It has been upgraded to 1.7GB of internal memory, which can be further increased with a microSD card (not included).
The DC-40 transmitter collar weighs just 8 ounces. Its length is adjustable from 9 to 22 inches. The transmitter itself is actually self-contained, so that you can mount it on any 1" collar strap. Its rechargeable and replaceable lithium-ion battery pack has 17 - 48 hours of battery life (based on update rate). It comes with a charging cradle and you can select update rates of 5, 10, 30 or 120 seconds. It is rugged and waterproof and is designed to maintain its position on the top of your dog's neck.
Another feature is pin-lock security: You select your own four-digit security code that must be entered on the Astro 320 handheld unit for it to be able to track your dog. No unauthorized person can track your dog; this feature is particularly beneficial during competitive events.
