OK, so perhaps the title is a bit light for the topic…no joke though, there have been a crazy amount of earthquakes recently. As pet owners, it is really important to be prepared for anything that could happen, we’d do it for our children, right? And unless we have Sophie, the wonder dog who can sense earthquakes (video at bottom), there are simple things that we can do to be as well prepared as possible. Read on and educate yourself…
• Make sure that your pooch has the proper ID tags, in the event that you become separated during the earthquake, these are a sure fire way to find your dog again. Additionally, you might also want to get your pet micro chipped (which you should do regardless, if you ask me!). Even if they lose their collar in the catasphrophe chaos, the chances of becoming reunited are greater.
• Make sure that your pet does not hide under anything, like the dining room table or bed. Also keep them away from anything glass: windows, bookshelves and any heavy items that might fall or produce glass shards and other potentially lethal particles during the earthquake. Lay in a fetal position away from these hazards, keeping the pet close.
• During the earthquake, in your move to flee the home and if Fido is small enough, carry them! It will be a million times easier and the chances of them escaping from you and into further danger are pretty slim. If your dog is too large, leash em’ up and bring them safety. Do bother grabbing their bones, toys, dog bed or other items; your priority is making sure that the pet is safe.
• Plain and simple, don’t forget your pet! With all of the strangeness going on, they are definitely to be tense and skittish. Find a quick minute to connect and comfort them. They get just as anxious and have NO idea what is going on!
Most of these tips are no-brainers…as promised. Sophie, the dog who can sense earthquakes!
